Orchestre National de Barbès

The Orchestre National de Barbès (ONB) is more like a hydra than a musical ensemble, with its protean structure varying according to the availability of its twenty-odd members. One night there might be three guitarists giving the music an African tone and at the next night's concert, one of them might be replaced by a violinist.
Algeria, Morocco, Mali, Senegal--the ONB is a joyous synthesis of different musical idioms. Its origins lie in a whole series of encounters and colourful personalities, beginning with Youcef Boukella, a native of the Algiers neighbourhood Belcourt who arrived in Paris at the peak of raï to accompany Cheb Mami and jazz musician Safy Boutella. There's also Larbi Dida, one of the great voices of the Arab music scene in Paris. And Aziz Sehmaoui, a Sufi nourished on African rhythm and Britpop. Not to mention Kamel, the percussionist and king of ragga rhyme. And last but not least, Fateh, recently exiled from Algeria. Plus the buddies, friends and kindred spirits who gravitate around this hard core.
Why is it called the National Orchestra of Barbès, the neighbourhood of immigrants in the north of Paris? Because, according to the liner notes, "Barbès is a bit of Africa that somehow wound up at the foot of the Sacré Coeur. A place where you find couscous and chicken, smoke-filled bars and satellite dishes".
